(Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)When Notre Dame and USC meet next Saturday, there will be a great deal on the line for both schools. The Fighting Irish will be fighting for a College Football Playoff spot. The Trojans will be fighting just to play in a bowl game.USC, after an ugly loss to rival UCLA, is now just 5-6 on the season. The Trojans gave up nearly 500 yards to the Bruins, who had just two wins on the season coming into the contest. As a result, USC will need to beat its other big rival – Notre Dame – in next week’s contest to finish with a 6-6 mark and become bowl eligible. It’s a tall task, considering the Fighting Irish are currently 11-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation. If you’re wondering, it’s been a long, long time since USC didn’t win six games in a season. While the school has dealt with bowl bans, they haven’t actually lost seven games in a season since back in 2000. Paul Hackett was the coach then.#USC will lose to a 2-8 #UCLA squad and now have to beat undefeated Notre Dame just to make a bowl game. There is no way Clay Helton should be back next season.— Ryan Abraham (@insidetroy) November 18, 2018Clay Helton, in his first two seasons, finished with records of 10-3 and 11-3. It’ll be interesting to see how the schools handles what has to be considered a down year.Notre Dame and USC will square off at 8:00 PM ET next Saturday.last_img
