‘Exciting’ Lewis replaces injured Simmons in West Indies’ T20 World Cup squad

first_imgKOLKATA, India (CMC):In-form batsman Evin Lewis will replace the injured Lendl Simmons on the West Indies team for the World T20 tournament which gets under way in India on Tuesday, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced yesterday.Lewis, 24, is receiving his maiden call up after a string of outstanding performances in the NAGICO Super50 and the WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) for Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.The T&T cricketer posted scores of 74, 101, 87 and 104 against Jamaica and blasted 56 against the Leeward Islands last week.Lewis, a former West Indies Under-19 player, has been called up as a replacement for Simmons.REPRESENTATIONHe is yet to play at the international level, having represented Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean T20 and the Champions League, and has also played for T&T Red Steel and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League.”Evin Lewis, a young and exciting batsman who we believe will fit into the team set-up very well. He has the ability to perform at this level of the game,” said chairman of selectors, Clive Lloyd.”His selection is in keeping with our policy to give exposure to young, talented players we believe will help to carry West Indies cricket forward.”Simmons, the 31-year-old right-handed top-order batsman, will remain in Trinidad to continue his rehabilitation, while left handed Lewis was due to fly out yesterday.West Indies arrived in Kolkata on Monday after completing a two-week preparation camp in the United Arab Emirates where they won all four warm-up matches.The Caribbean side has been drawn in Group One of the Super 10 stage where they will play alongside England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and one of the qualifiers from the first round.They will play their two official warm-up matches against hosts India tomorrow and Australia on Sunday.Lewis will be hoping to get to India in time for the second warm-up match against Australia.West Indies are entering the World Cup second in the ICC rankings, with India installed as the top-ranked team.last_img
